Daniel's Story
The Meggs Foundation was formed in 2019 by four families in south Charlotte to assist Daniel Meggs in paying medical bills and day-to-day living expenses as he was going through aggressive cancer treatments. Daniel was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer in 2017 at the age of 27, three weeks prior to exchanging wedding vows with his high school sweetheart. Sadly, Daniel passed away on February 21, 2020 and survived by both his wife and son born just two weeks after Daniel’s death.

Daniel grew up in Charlotte playing at Pine Lake Country Club, starring at Butler High School, was an Arnold Palmer scholarship golfer at Wake Forest and then became the Assistant Golf Professional at TPC Piper Glen as a young adult. Daniel’s heart and grit was an inspiration to those around him as he battled cancer. He was beloved by the community and particularly by those Junior Golfers that he mentored and instilled the love of the game that he gained as a youth.
Daniel felt immensely blessed by this support and his extended family has participated in efforts to honor his wishes “to pay it forward.” In a letter to the Board, Daniel wrote:
I have said since the beginning of this process that it is my wish that everyone could feel that love and support that I have felt just once it their life. It has truly changed my life… We are so thankful to the Meggs Foundation and I pray that we can get to the point where we can use fundraising to help other young people going through life threatening diseases as well.
Daniel’s father, Doug Meggs, joined the Board after Daniel’s passing and served as Daniel’s voice in guiding the strategic direction of the Foundation. Tragically, Doug passed away suddenly in August 2021, but his tribute to his son at our first Bingo event captured the essence of Daniel and the reason for the Board’s passion for this mission.
